You

Live Wire

Everybody has to draw. The pile is only getting shorter.

A pile with one fewer live card in it than there are of you. Duck, peek, or push the draw onto somebody else — but sooner or later you take one. 2 to 8 people, about 10 minutes.

It is the shortest possible explanation of a real game: play a card if you have one, then take a card. Everybody at the table understands it before the first person has finished their turn, which makes it the thing to put on while the last two people are still joining the call.

The whole occasion is one person hesitating with four other people watching them hesitate. Nobody is being judged on knowledge, on spelling, on being funny or on their English — the only thing on display is whether you can be talked into taking one more, which is a safe thing to be teased about.

It does knock people out, and it refuses to make you sit through it. A hand ends when the first person goes out, so being unlucky costs you ninety seconds and a place on the sheet rather than the rest of the break. Five hands, and everyone is dealt back in for every one of them.
