Head to Head

Ten questions, two of you, and one clock between you.

Two people, ten questions, the same ten at the same moment. Being right pays and being early pays more. About 5 minutes in a browser, nothing to install.

This is the one to reach for when two people are on a call and one of them is new. There is nothing to explain and nothing to read out — a question goes up, there are four boxes, and the first one teaches the rest of it — and five minutes of it gives two strangers something to have opinions about that is not their work.

Nobody can revise for it. Every question is one you reason your way to rather than one you were taught, and the deck refuses anything that would favour whoever grew up in the right country: no currency, no unit half the world converts, nothing dated, nowhere on a map. Somebody two weeks into the job is exactly as well placed as somebody nine years in, which is the point of putting it in front of a pair rather than a team.

It is short enough to be a rematch. Five minutes is a coffee, and the ten questions are drawn fresh every time out of a deck five times that size — so going again is going again rather than sitting the same paper twice.
